Universal Design

Creating an environment designed with the flexibility to serve people of all ages and physical capabilities, while maintaining the atmosphere / character of conventional space design.

Dave started his own firm in 1984, in Petersburgh, N.Y. His firm specializes in environmental conservation and

socially conscious design while reflecting compatibility with the neighboring "built" community. Dave’s work over the years, has earned his firm nine National Design Awards for various Capital District projects. Dave began his profession in energy conscious design while working his way, as a carpenter, through Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Architecture.

Dave follows a socially conscious approach to architecture. Every project is undertaken with an eye towards design for the project end users. Dave has been an advocate of Energy Conscious Design since the 1970s, and as such, has always reviewed all his projects in this light. As a logical extension of Dave’s passion, he was certified as a LEED (United States Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional in 2006. Since that time, Dave’s firm has designed and received certifications for 14 LEED gold and platinum houses, and 2 LEED gold commercial projects.

In January 2009, Dave’s firm and the City of Schenectady, received the Platinum Award (the HUD Secretary’s highest Award for Excellence) in the Best in American Living Award (BALA) national competition. The annual competition is sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders and Professional Builder Magazine. The award recognizes projects based on affordability, sustainability, public/private partnerships, superior design, accessibility and innovation in the residential housing industry. The project was featured in the February 2009 issue of Professional Builder magazine.

Additionally, consistent w/ the principals of socially and energy conscious design, Dave’s criteria include Universal Design*, use of innovative technologies, use of low maintenance materials, high quality construction techniques, and aesthetics designed to be compatible with the character of the adjoining community.

Dave’s firm has demonstrated its leadership in the design of socially conscious, green and sustainable, built environment. His firm’s history reflects an outstanding commitment and consideration for community and planet.
